How to Use Ethernet Metered Connections in Windows 10 Creators Update

How to Make a Wired Network a Metered Connection

As we’ve covered earlier, there are ways to tame Windows 10’s heavy data usage.  (See our post on How to Limit Windows 10 Data Use Over a Metered Connection.) The best and most comprehensive option is to enable the “set as metered connection” setting, which you can now do for your Ethernet adapter. Here’s how to create a wired metered connection:

  1. Click Start > Settings > Network & Internet.
  2. Select the Ethernet tab then click your Ethernet connection.Windows 10, Ethernet, Metered Connection, Creators Update, Operating system
  3. Toggle on the option Set as metered connection.Windows 10, Ethernet, Metered Connection, Creators Update, Operating system

That’s it! Your Ethernet connection will now efficiently sip data when connected to the internet.

How to Pause Windows Updates

One more quick data-saving tip before we go: In the Creators Update, you can now pause updates for up to 35 days. This will explicitly prevent large feature updates from automatically installing. Pausing updates won’t prevent Windows Defender definitions from being downloaded, which is understandable.

  1. Go to Start Settings > Update & security.
  2. Click Advanced options.
  3. Check the Defer feature updates option.
  4. Toggle on Pause Updates.
