How To Find Which Apps Slow The iPhone Down

If developers don’t update apps to be compliant with the latest iOS version, the apps can slow your iPhone down. If you launch such an app on your phone, iOS warns you that it might slow your device down. This is an unfortunate problem that arises when developers do not update their apps regularly. As iOS evolves, minor and major changes to the OS effect how apps run. Apple updates developers regularly with these changes and makes the beta version of the next iOS available to them so they can update their apps. Not all developers will comply with it though and this leaves you with apps that can slow your device down. iOS 10.3, currently in public beta, now lets you view a complete list of which apps slow the iPhone down.

Open the Settings app and go to About>Applications. On iOS 10.2 and older, you can only view the space taken up by applications. On iOS 10.3 and above, you can tap the ‘Applications’ to go to the App Compatibility screen.

Here you can see a complete list of apps that will slow your iPhone down.

You can tap an app and it will take you to its App Store page. You can leave a comment on the app to tell the developer to update it but that’s about it. It’s worth mentioning that developers often have little to no way of keeping track of these comments. If it’s an app you really like, find the support information for the app and send the developer a polite email.

In some cases, the apps slowing your iPhone down have been pulled from the App Store. For example, the Stickered app by Facebook. This kind of app will never be updated. You either have to deal with it slowing your phone down or find an alternative. In other cases, such as with Infinity Blade I, the app is still available and waiting on the developer to update it.

The list of which apps slow the iPhone down is not available to iOS users on the stable version at present.

How To Fix OneNote Not Saving Local Backups

The OneNote 2016 desktop app has an odd little bug that prevents it from saving local backups. The app takes regular local backups so that you never lose your notes and notebooks. If you have sync enabled across devices or to OneDrive, the local backup may be slightly less important but important nevertheless. OneNote backs up everything automatically but you can also force it to take a back-up anytime. If you’re experiencing this bug, the app fails to create local backups of your notebooks. Fortunately, there is a simple way to fix OneNote not saving local backups. Here’s how.

This is a bug that only plagues OneNote for the desktop. The bug doesn’t appear on the OneNote UWP app bundled with Windows 10 simply because it doesn’t have a local backup feature.

To fix OneNote not saving local backups, open the app and go to File>Options. Select the ‘Save & Backup’ tab from the left. Under the ‘Backup’ section, look for the ‘Back up notebooks stored on SharePoint’ option and check it.

Click the ‘Back Up All Notebook Now’ button below this option and OneNote will save the backup this time around. A confirmation message appears on your screen to let you know the backup was created successfully.

This is a known bug. The backups fail to save regardless if you use SharePoint or not. This option is for those that use SharePoint but it seems to interfere with the local backup function even if you don’t use SharePoint.

Enabling this option rectifies the interference that is being caused. The bug has been around for awhile and so far this is the only available fix. The bug itself is a significant problem but because the fix is simple to apply, you won’t hear too many OneNote users complaining about it.

If this is the first you’re hearing about this bug, it’s probably a good idea to check this option out.

How To Snooze Tabs In Firefox

Mozilla develops experimental features for Firefox. A user running the stable version of Firefox can test these experimental features out by installing the Test Pilot add-on. A new experimental feature called Snooze tabs has been added via the Test Pilot add-on and it lets you postpone when you browse a tab. A snoozed tab is a tab that you can dismiss until later. You can select a time and date for when the tab will open next. Here’s how you can snooze tabs in Firefox.

Install Test Pilot Add-On

To snooze tabs in Firefox, you need to install the Test Pilot add-on and then enable the Snooze Tabs feature. Visit the link at the bottom to install the add-on. Follow this link to enable Snooze Tabs.

Snooze Tabs

When enabled, Snooze Tabs adds a bell icon next to the URL bar. When you click this button, a menu listing snooze times for the current tab opens. You have six options to choose from; later that same day, tomorrow, the weekend, next week, next month, or whenever you next open Firefox. For each option, you can select a time and date. Click the Day and time next to an option to select them. If you click the title of the option, e.g., This Weekend, the snooze time will be set to the default time for that option.

Click Snooze when you’re done. A confirmation alert will appear at the top of the page. Click ‘Ok’ on the alert to snooze the tab. The tab will close automatically after that.

You can review the tabs you snoozed from the bell icon. Click it and click the ‘Manage snoozed tabs’ option at the bottom. The Managing Snooze Tabs menu shows the tabs you’ve snoozed and how long you’ve set the snooze time for. If you hover the mouse over a snoozed tab, a delete option will appear.

How To Add Photos, Videos, And GIFs To Your Whatsapp Status

Facebook bought Whatsapp a few ago. The only noteworthy change made to Whatsapp since the acquisition was support for GIFs. For the most part, Facebook left Whatsapp the same as they found it until now. Facebook has long been copying features from Snapchat and including them in the Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram apps. Following this, Whatsapp has a new way to share status updates and these updates closely resemble stories that you share on Snapchat. You can add photos, videos, and GIFs to your Whatsapp status with this new feature. It remains visible for twenty-four hours and you can control who it is visible to. Here’s how it works.

How To Get The New Status Feature

This feature is slowly rolling out to users. If you don’t see it yet, just wait. You will not have to update the Whatsapp device on your phone provided you’re already running the latest version right now. The ‘Favorites’ tab will be replaced with a ‘Status’ tab when the feature is rolled out to you.

Add Photos, Videos, And GIFs To Your Status

Open Whatsapp and go to the Status tab. Tap the button that looks like a circle with a plus button to update your status. It will open to the camera view finder. If you want to record a video or take a photo, you can do so here.

To share videos or photos from your camera roll or to add GIFs tap the photo button at the bottom left. You can select a photo or video from your camera roll or tap GIF at the bottom left to search for and add GIFs.

You can draw on and add text to the photos, videos, and GIFs you share in your Whatsapp status. Tap the ‘Send’ button to share it with everyone. It takes a few seconds for the status to be shared.

If you tap your own status, you can see how many people have viewed it.

Delete Your Current Whatsapp Status

Go to the Status tab and swipe left on your status. A Delete button will appear. Tap Delete and your current status will be removed.

Control Status Privacy

Whatsapp has always had privacy controls for the visibility of your status. Back when you could only share a text status, you had the option to share it with everyone, just your contacts, or with no one. The privacy settings have been update slightly. You can now share your status with just your contacts, all contacts with some exceptions, or with select contacts.

To change the privacy of your status, go to the Settings tab in Whatsapp, and select your status privacy under Account>Privacy>Status.

View Whatsapp Status

You can view your own Whatsapp status from the Status tab. Here you will also see a list of all status updates from your contacts. Tap an update to view it. The update scrolls automatically but, if you tap your screen on the right side when viewing an update, it will jump to the next image. If you tap your screen on the left side, it will jump to the previous image. Swipe right to return to the Status screen.

You can reply to a status with an image. Tap ‘Reply’ at the bottom of a status that has been shared.

How To Change The Mail App Background In Windows 10

Windows 10 comes with a stock Mail app. It isn’t anything to write home about and Microsoft has made it so that it doesn’t compete with Outlook. For a basic app, it’s reasonably good. The Mail app supports multiple accounts and the People and Calendar apps are integrated in it well enough. It also has some really neat customization features which let you set a custom color and background for the app. You can set a different color and background for each account you’ve added to the app . This gives you an easy way to differentiate which account you’re currently using. Here’s how you can set a color and change the Mail app background in Windows 10.

Open the Mail app and select the account you want to change the background color for. The Mail app has a few background presets but you can also use a custom image for the Mail app background. If that’s what you want to do, look for a good image first.

Open Account Settings

Click the hamburger icon at the top left of the Mail app. Select the account you want to customize and click the cog wheel button at the bottom. A Settings panel will open on the right side. Select Personalization from this panel.

Change The Mail App Colors

Scroll down to the ‘Colors’ section and select a color from one of the presets. You can select a preset, or you can set the app to use the same color as the Windows accent color.

From a visual point of view, the accent color will almost always look better. If you change your background and the accent colors often, this might not be the best option for you. In that case, select a preset color and avoid the accent color. The presets aren’t too bright and you have more than the basic colors to choose from.

Change The Mail App Background

To change the Mail App background, scroll further down to the ‘Background’ section. The Mail app has background presets available and you can click a preset to apply it.

To set a custom image, click the ‘Browse’ button under the presets and select the image you want to use. The image is applied right away. Click anywhere outside the Personalization panel to close it and you’re done.

If you’re big on aesthetics and don’t mind spending a little time on it, a good idea is to set the same background for the Mail app as you have for your desktop. This ensures that, if you’ve decided to use the accent colors in the Mail app, it will always look good.

How To Find The Current Desktop Background Image In Windows 10

Windows 10 remembers the last few images you set as your desktop background. It has an easy switching feature in the Settings app that lets you set a recently wallpaper image as the background in one click. If you open the Settings app and go to Personalization>Background you can see the last five images you used for your desktop background, including the current one. Windows 10 saves a copy of these images so, even if you accidentally delete the original image, you don’t lose your desktop background. In the event you do delete the image by accident, you can get it back from the copy Windows 10 keeps of it. Here’s how you can find the current desktop background image in Windows 10.

If you’re looking to get a copy one of your recent background images, go to the Settings app first and set the image as your background.

Next, open File Explorer and type in the following in the address bar. Hit enter. You don’t need administrative rights for this and you don’t need to edit anything in the address.

%AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Themes\CachedFiles

A copy of the current desktop background image is saved here. Don’t move/cut the image. Make a copy of it some place you won’t lose it or accidentally delete it.

If you don’t find a copy of your current desktop background image here, try this address instead. As before, you need only enter it in File Explorer and you don’t need administrative rights to access the location.

%AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Themes\TranscodedWallpaper

When you enter this location in File Explorer, you will be asked to select an app to view the image. The Photos app, or Windows Photo Viewer will both work.

This location, and this little tip has its limitation. For example, if the wallpaper you’re looking for is no longer visible in the ‘Background’ tab in the Settings app, you can’t recover it. It will work for your last five wallpapers but nothing older.

How To Tag Someone In An Email In The Mail App In Windows 10

People miss important emails all the time. They either forget to respond to an email or they deem an email not relevant to them. With so many emails sent to our inbox everyday, it’s hard to make sure the right person replies. That’s why those meetings that should’ve been an email happen. Windows 10 comes with a stock Mail app. It’s basic but enough to meet primary email needs. Clearly, Microsoft doesn’t want anything competing with Outlook but wants to give users a mail app in their out-of-the-box PC. The Mail app has just been updated and a tag feature has been added to it. The tag feature is a call-to-attention that lets you tag someone in an email. Here’s how it works.

This feature is available to everyone running the stable version of Windows 10. It is not an insider feature. You must update the Mail and Calendar app. The Mail app should have access to the contacts saved to your email account.

Click the compose new email button and click inside the email body. Start typing the name of whoever it is you want to tag and their email will appear automatically. Select it to tag the contact in your email.

The tag is a mailto: link for the contact. It doesn’t make email alerts any richer and your recipient won’t know they have been tagged in an email. It looks the same across all email apps and devices.

The question here is; what good is it if you can tag someone in an email? If the tag isn’t alerting the tagged contact that they have specifically been mentioned in an email then what’s the point?

For one thing, it serves as a great tool for searching emails. If you use an email app that doesn’t have a great search feature, the tag will be helpful. It’s also useful when you need to assign tasks in an email. You can tag someone in an email with their specific tasks which in turn allows them to search for their tasks.

Ideally, the feature should work like tags on Facebook or Dropbox but there are technical constraints that don’t allow that to happen. For one, Microsoft can’t compel Gmail or Yahoo to add support for the feature. It certainly can’t compel Google or Apple to add support for special email notifications. If, by some miracle that actually happened, there are still too many email apps that Microsoft can’t compel to support this feature.

With all that said, perhaps Microsoft will make notifications on Windows 10 richer in coming updates. Windows users still comprise of a large chunk of desktop usage and it would be a welcome change.

How To Check If A Website Is Affected By CloudBleed

CloudBleed is a new vulnerability that effects CloudFlare. CloudFare is a content delivery network and security provided that is the backbone of some very large, big name websites. This new vulnerability has made it possible for sensitive information; passwords, encrypted keys, and more. A simple Google search will not bring up this leaked information. As with any security breach, the standard protocol is to change your password immediately. The leak has bee patched but it has affected quite a few websites. Cloudbleed Indicator is a Chrome extension that alerts you when you visit a website affected by the vulnerability of the same name. CloudBleed is a Firefox add-on and Chrome Extension that can search your history and your bookmarks for affected websites. Here’s how to check if a website is affected by CloudBleed.

Search History & Bookmarks

Install CloudBleed. The add-on adds a cloud icon next to the URL bar. Click it to open the add-ons settings panel. You can search your history for websites affected by CloudBleed. Likewise, you can run the same check on your bookmarks to see if you saved a link from an affected website.

You can narrow the search down to a specific number of days and you can search your history and bookmarks separately. Select how far back you want to search your history from the ‘Last’ field by entering the number of days. Click the search button and CloudBleed will give you a complete list of all affected websites that you have visited.

For bookmarks, there is no time filter. Click the search button and CloudBleed will scan all your bookmarked links. The search results will list bookmarks from affected websites.

Check Live

The CloudBleed extension and add-on searches your browsing history and bookmarks. It doesn’t tell you when/if you visit an affected website. CloudBleed Indicator is a Chrome extension that can run a live check.  CloudBleed adds a cloud icon next to the URL bar.  The extension will run a live check; the cloud icon turns red if the website you’re visiting has been affected by CloudBleed.

CloudBleed Indicator is only available for Chrome at present. The developers are working on a Firefox add-on.

In the meantime, consider scanning your history and bookmarks at the very least if you use Firefox. If possible, switch temporarily to Chrome so you can check if a website is affected by CloudBleed when you visit it.

CloudFlare has claimed the data breach isn’t massive. The affected website were not in use and their traffic was low.

How To Create A Quick YouTube Playlist In Chrome

You can create playlists on YouTube but some conditions apply. For one, you have to sign into YouTube. If you don’t sign into YouTube, the playlist feature will not be available. When you’re creating a playlist, you have to add the videos one by one. For each video you want to add, you have to open it and click the ‘Add To’ option under the video’s description. That is three clicks per video for the playlist you want to create. The good news is, if you use Chrome, you can create a quick YouTube playlist using TubeLister. It’s a Chrome extension that will add all open YouTube videos to a new playlist. Here’s how it works.

Install TubeLister and visit YouTube. With this extension installed, you are no longer bound to be signed into YouTube to create a playlist.

How It Works

Open all the video you want to add to a single playlist. You don’t have to let them buffer or start playing. All you need is for the videos to be open in their own respective tabs. Open as many videos as you want.

Once you’ve opened all the video, click the TubeLister icon next to the URL bar. The extension will close all the YouTube video tabs and open a new one. This new tab will be the playlist and every single video you had open will be included in it.

By default, the playlist has no title. You can’t edit the title and add your own. The GIF above shows a playlist created while signed out of YouTube.

TubeLister reduces the work involved in creating a playlist. You still have to search for the videos you want to add to a playlist. Unfortunately, there really isn’t a way to make that a shorter process. Beyond that, you can create a quick YouTube playlist with the extension.

Limitations

The TubeLister extension works the same regardless if you sign in to YouTube or not. Even if you sign into YouTube the extension will always create a new playlist. It will not ask if you want to add videos to an existing playlist. You still can’t edit the title of the playlist and you can’t save it to your account.

The playlist thus has a rather short lifespan. This is a major limitation but that doesn’t make the extension useless. You can always bookmark the link to the playlist that TubeLister generates and view it again whenever you like. YouTube doesn’t let you create playlists from a link which is disappointing but bookmarking the playlist works pretty well to circumvent this.

How To Search And Share GIFs On Android Without Switching Apps

The internet loves GIFs. They’re the best way to react to anything whether it’s good news, bad news, or political news. This image type is so popular that Facebook, Twitter and Whatsapp have added GIF support as well, complete with a built-in search feature for finding them. Creating a GIF is pretty easy but services like Giphy and Imgur have such a rich library of GIFs, you never really need to create a new one. You can search the extensive library of GIFs available on Giphy and just use one from there. GIF Share Overlay is a free Android app that lets you search and Share GIFs on Android from anywhere. The app is accessed from the Notifications shade. It adds a floating overlay to your screen where you can search and share GIFs from.

Install GIF Share Overlay and a ‘GIF’ icon is added to the Notifications shade. Pull down the Notifications shade and tap ‘GIF Overlay’.

The app’s floating overlay will open. It will appear on top of the current app/screen. By default, the overlay shows you an ad. Tap the search bar and type in what kind of GIF you’re looking for.

By default, GIF Share Overlay loads twenty results. This makes it so the results are quick to load. Each GIF plays automatically within the overlay. You can keep scrolling the overlay to view more.

To share a GIF, tap it so that it’s highlighted. Tap the share button next to the search bar to share it. The Android share menu will open. Select a contact or an app to share the GIF with.

Tap the close button to close the overlay. GIF Share Overlay will continue to run in the Notifications shade. Any time you want to search and share GIFs on Android, pull down the Notifications shade and tap GIF Overlay.

GIF Share Overlay lets you customize the appearance of the overlay from its settings. Open the overlay and tap the cogwheel button next to the share button and the app’s setting will open. Here you can change the color of the overlay to one of the available presets. Additionally, you can change how many GIFs the app loads by default by dragging the ‘Max Results’ slider to the right. The mode selection doesn’t appear to do anything. The app has only one mode; GIF search.

GIF Share Overlay searches Giphy for GIFs. The app has only one source for finding GIFs but Giphy has an exceptionally large library so no complaints there. When using the app to search for GIFs, some of the results might not load. Simply tap the refresh button to force them to load.

The app is pretty good and when it shows ads, it isn’t trying to trick you into tapping on them. The only shortcoming the app has is that you cannot drag and reposition the floating overlay on your screen. It’s a small shortcoming but one that might make for a lesser user experience. The app is nevertheless the easiest, and most unobtrusive way to search and share GIFs on Android.
